Things that happened during the life of the Brick Yard
David Pangburn took a claim in Sauk Centre in 1861 and purchased the family farm on the shore of Big Sauk Lake
in 1864. He found the clay around the lake was perfect for making bricks and started making them within a
few years. The brick yard continued making bricks until just after World War I. All that being said, it is
sometimes hard relating that time period to what was happening in the rest of the world.
Here are a few interesting facts to understand that period of time.
The Civil War began in January 1861 and ended in 1865; the Battle of San Juan Hill was July 1, 1898 with
Teddy Rosevelt and the Rough Riders; World War I went from July 1914 to November 1918.
During this time there were thirteen presidents of the United States:
Abraham Lincoln 1861-1865, Andrew Johnson 1865-1869, Ulysses Simpson Grant 1869-1877, Rutherford Birchard Hayes 1877-1881,
James Abram Garfield 1881, Chester Alan Arthur 1881-1885, Grover Cleveland 1885-1889, Benjamin Harrison 1889-1893,
Grover Cleveland 1893-1897, William McKinley 1897-1901, Theodore Roosevelt 1901-1909, William Howard Taft 1909-1913, and
Woodrow Wilson 1913-1921.
There were some good guys: Waytt Earp, Doc Holiday (good and bad), Wild Bill Hickock, Pat Garrett,
Bat Masterson, Bill Tilghman.
There were even more bad guys: Frank and Jesse James, the Younger Bothers, Butch Cassidy and the Wild Bunch,
Sundance Kid, John Wesley Hardin, Billy the Kid, Belle Starr, Black Bart, and many others.
Famous Indian fighters like: Bill Cody, Kit Carson, George Custer and the battle at the Little Big Horn.
Famous Indians include: Geronimo, Crazy Horse, Sitting Bull, and Chief Joseph.
All these things are gone now and like the history of this country, the history of the brick yard is
interesting. Many of David Pangburn's family members are in the family plot in Sauk Center at the Oakland
Cementary. Peace and thanks to them and all those who made the 1800's and early 1900's great.
