The Grist Mill, on the left, was built
with 100,000 Pangburn bricks
The Pangburn brickyard owned by Mr. David Pangburn, is located in the north part of section 34 in Tood County,
three and a half miles south from Sauk Centre and about a half mile southwest from the Sauk river, was begun
around 1875. The yearly product of about 500,000 bricks are of a very superior quality and sold at $9 to $10 per
thousand, The clay used is yellowish, levelly stratified. No sand is required for tempering, and no lime
concretions occur in the clay. About two-thirds of the kiln are red bricks; while one-third, subjected to greater
heat in burning, are cream-colored.Many of the buildings in Sauk Centre and surrounding towns were built with
brick made by David Pangburn and his family. When the bricks were made, about one in every 10 was stamped with
the name of the brick maker, David Pangburn. The brick yard ceased operations after World War I.
Today the brick yard is gone. There are a few traces of it left if you know where to look. But, for the most
part the land was divided and sold and now houses dot the landscape where the kilns and drying sheds once stood.
Well that is what we do know. What we don't know would fill a book. What we need is all the information we
can find. Hopefully we can gather enough material so we can preserve a little piece of history about this area
that should not be lost or forgotten. If you have any pictures or historical information of any kind on the
brick yard, please send it to us. We are going to have a contributor's page on this site and everyone who helps
will have their name, and photo if they want, entered into our contributor's page.
If you have photos or documents, please contact us for shipping information. All photos and documents will
be scanned and returned to the sender.
Please contact us with any suggestions on where we can look for more information.
